TURNERS FALLS — Jay Majerowski wears many hats — band member, co-op produce purchaser, stepfather and vintage store owner.
“I’m a busy guy,” he said. “But I like to stay busy.”
Life has been especially busy since June, when he signed a lease for the space at 125 Avenue A that was formerly occupied by Nina’s Nook. On Friday, July 26, Majerowski’s weeks of preparation alongside business partner Elliot Hartman-Russell will culminate in the grand opening of Great Hauls, a vintage shop with eclectic clothing and items curated from across the Pioneer Valley.
“I’ve been pulling 80-hour weeks for the last two months trying to get things going,” Majerowksi said.
Majerowski describes himself as “an appreciator of old things” who has been invested in curating vintage clothing and items since he was a teenager. Now 35, Majerowski has kept a foot in the vintage and antique scene as a consignor for a shop in Northhampton, where he connected with Hartman-Russell.
Both Majerowski and Hartman-Russell decided to branch out on their own, settling on Turners Falls for the location and the unique space that was available. Both men are residents of Turners Falls and they felt the village would be a welcoming place to settle.
“There’s a lot of cool shops opening up and stuff happening, and we just wanted to be a part of that,” Majerowski said.
With its unique sellers, Majerowski feels Great Hauls will fit in well in Turners Falls.

“Turners seems to create weird, vintage, antique shops,” Majerowski said. “To me, that’s a good sign.”
Items available at Great Hauls include unique vintage pieces for men and women, particularly from the 1950s to the 1980s, with Majerowski and Hartman-Russell sharing an interest in those decades of vintage goods. Although the store is small, Majerowski said there’s “plenty of inventory.”
“I’ve just slowly collected really cool things,” he said, adding that he prioritizes quality and items manufactured in the United States. “That’s what we really want. A lot of that stuff is so timeless and it looks so cool.”
Majerowski is not opposed to the possibility of expansion. As Great Hauls opens, the store will be stocked with items purchased by Majerowski and Hartman-Russell, but Majerowski is open to community members bringing items to trade in. He also hopes to help people who want to understand the value of a vintage item they have by bringing it by the shop.
“I’m really looking forward to seeing all the kinds of stuff people are gonna bring me,” he said. “I like having a space where people can bring their vintage clothes that they’re not too sure what they’re gonna do with or don’t know if it’s worth anything. They could bring them here, and we could just tell them and be a place to ask questions about that sort of thing.”
Although the shop is just getting started, both Majerowski and Hartman-Russell are looking to the future.
Part of this ambition is to host events at the shop and participate in broader community events, even with the limited storefront space.
“They have to be the right thing because the space is so limited,” Majerowski said, “but we hope to do some cool community events here. Music, poetry, art, some kind of cool things.”
He hopes the store can open early to welcome customers who may be out for brunch and he also hopes to stay open later on some nights to host events. Majerowski said he sees the potential for Turners Falls businesses to collaborate on events to drive business and use the unique space Avenue A provides.
“With all these business spaces filling up, you can make that happen as a town,” Majerowski said. “I would love to see more of that in Turners Falls. It’s just built for it.”
The grand opening for Great Hauls at 125 Avenue A will be held on Friday, July 26, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Clothing, records and lawn decorations will be for sale.
Great Hauls will start posting on dedicated Facebook and Instagram pages with updates after the grand opening. The business will be open on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
