Grammer, Henry to perform on 1794 Meetinghouse

NEW SALEM — The 1794 Meetinghouse at 26 South Main St. will present Pioneer Valley singer-songwriter Tracy Grammer with Jim Henry at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, July 27.

Tickets are $20 for adults and $10 for anyone 13 to 17 years old. Children ages 12 and under will be admitted for free.

A typical show with Grammer and Henry includes a stage filled with instruments (such as acoustic/electric guitars, violin, mandolin and dobro) and a set list filled with original songs, instrumentals, reimagined covers and highlights from Dave Carter’s award-winning catalog.

Grammer is a writer, actor and musician known in folk circles for her vocals, spirited fiddle and intricate guitar work. A one-time member of Joan Baez’s band, she has traveled throughout North America, Europe and Japan, playing her own songs and those of her favorite writers while also paying tribute to songwriter Dave Carter, with whom she performed and recorded from 1996 until his death in 2002.

Henry is a singer, songwriter and producer just off the road from a three-year stint with Grammy-winner Mary Chapin Carpenter. He is also the host of the “Fifty Pro-Tips for Musicians” podcast and authored a book of the same name.

WENDELL — Kathy-Ann and Myron Becker will be the next honorees of Gail Mason’s “Honoring Elders” series at the Wendell Meetinghouse at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 6.

Attendees are invited to share stories, memories and appreciations of the Beckers’ contributions to the region.

The Beckers came to Wendell in 1971 to homestead and live off the land communally. Both took up significant roles in supporting the Wendell Free Library. Kathy-Ann was elected as a trustee and oversaw efforts to revitalize the library by updating and expanding its collection, increasing the number of trustees, finding (with Myron’s help) money for an additional employee and creating the Friends of the Wendell Free Library.

They were also involved in the beginnings of the Wendell Full Moon Coffeehouse, worked on Wendell Old Home Day planning, were members of Wendell’s Kitchen Committee (and its work to develop Board of Health-approved standards for food services) and represented Wendell on the Millers River Watershed Council’s board of directors.

Myron helped craft Wendell’s first zoning bylaws in 1976 on the Planning Board and went on to serve on the Zoning Board of Appeals. As a professional chef and entrepreneur, Myron was the director of food service at the former Maple Valley School in Wendell and, with Kathy-Ann’s help, ran a food concession called Myron’s No. 1 Yakitori.

Kathy-Ann, a nurse, was a firefighter and EMT for 11 years, and was town moderator for 29 years. She also led a team of volunteers that published the Wendell Post newspaper. She is currently Wendell’s official town crier.

“Honoring Elders,” sponsored in part by a grant from the Wendell Cultural Council, is free to attend. Support is also received from the Wendell Council on Aging. After expenses, donations will go to the Wendell Meetinghouse to support ongoing renovations and programming.
