ORANGE — You can now find three businesses under one roof at 1 South Main St.

Stephanie Cook moved Scrafty DIY Workshop into Trail Head Outfitters & General Store, which she has owned since Jan. 1, 2022, while her mother, Terry Bouchard, has been operating Corner Cafe in the back section for five years. Cook first opened Scrafty, which hosts parties and get-togethers where people paint wooden signs and other objects, on Main Street in Athol in 2018.

“I was there for four years and then I closed it when I purchased Trail Head,” Cook said. “It was supposed to go downstairs here, but that didn’t work out. So when that didn’t work out I decided I needed to come up with some sort of combo solution of the three businesses.”

She moved her brainchild into the Trail Head space on July 16, after closing for a week to get organized.

“We do private group parties. We do open workshops during the day. We offer walk-in sign-making and then sign-making by appointment,” she said. “It’s rolling right along. My biggest thing is the private parties. Someone will host it and invite all their friends … and then everybody gets to make something different.”

Prices start at $15. But Cook also hosts instructors that hold workshops on canvas painting, sewing and cookie decorating.

Cook noted that Scrafty’s creation was an accident.

“I was making [wooden signs] for fun and then I started making them for gifts and then I did a one-off group party with my friends, just for fun, and then three people there asked me to do a party for them and their friends,” she said. “So it snowballed.”

The wooden items and paint are essentially replacing outdoor gear, which Cook is phasing out of the store’s inventory. It had been Trail Head’s specialty when it was owned by Paul and Brenda Anderson, who started the business and sold it to Cook.

“That’s the thing that really slowed down. I’m closing it out. But I still have good relationships with all my reps and everything, so I can order things at anytime,” she mentioned. “It’s at 50% off and it’s barely moving out the door.”

She said she will still carry products like Dean’s Beans coffee, local honey and local maple syrup.

“It’s hard to compete with Amazon these days. Retail’s not the same anymore, especially after COVID,” she said. “Amazon can’t compete with me here. I’m offering an experience rather than just retail.”
